Cloud Gate ("The Bean"), Chicago
130 min

Millennium Park

Cloud Gate ("The Bean")

  • Free
  • Outdoor
  • Photo icon
  • Wheelchair OK
  • Family

Anish Kapoor's 110-ton stainless-steel sculpture is Chicago's most photographed landmark, and a perfect first stop on a fresh morning. The polished curves reflect Michigan Avenue's skyline back at you in a wide-angle warp that's impossible to capture on a postcard. We drop you at AT&T Plaza on the east edge of Millennium Park — Cloud Gate is right there, no walking required, and so is Crown Fountain a block south if you have time.

What to do here

  • Walk under the arch for the famous "omphalos" mirror selfie
  • Crown Fountain & Lurie Garden are a 3-minute stroll south
  • Coffee carts and restrooms inside the park

Insider tip: Shoot from underneath for the wide-angle 'omphalos' selfie. Crowds are smallest before 10 AM — we time you here on purpose.

Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago

Michigan Ave

Art Institute of Chicago

  • Indoor
  • Rainy-day friendly
  • 1 hour
  • Iconic art
  • Tickets req.

The Art Institute is the second-largest art museum in the U.S. and home to the originals of American Gothic, Nighthawks, A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, and one of the world's great Impressionist wings (Monet, Renoir, Caillebotte). One hour is enough to see the icons if you have a plan; the front desk hands out a free "highlights" map that we strongly recommend grabbing on arrival. The bronze lions out front make a great photo even if you don't go in.

What to do here

  • American Gothic & Nighthawks are both in the American collection on Floor 2
  • Don't miss the Thorne Miniature Rooms — kids love them
  • Modern Wing has skyline views from the third-floor sculpture terrace

Insider tip: Buy timed-entry tickets online the night before to skip the line. The Modern Wing entrance from Millennium Park is the fastest in.

Navy Pier, Chicago
31 hour

Lake Michigan

Navy Pier

  • Outdoor
  • Lake views
  • Free to walk
  • Family
  • Photo spot

Navy Pier juts almost a kilometre out into Lake Michigan and gives you the best skyline photo in the whole city — looking back west, downtown rises behind the harbour like a postcard. Walking the pier is free; the rides and indoor attractions are pay-as-you-go. In one hour you can comfortably walk to the end, grab a lake-view photo, and ride the 196-foot Centennial Wheel if the queue is short.

What to do here

  • Walk to the east end for the classic skyline shot
  • Centennial Wheel — 7 minutes, climate-controlled gondolas
  • Chicago Children's Museum & IMAX if you have kids

Insider tip: Walk first, decide on rides after. On windy days the lakefront is 10–15 °F colder than downtown — bring a layer.

Lunch Break — Downtown

  • Quick bite
  • Restrooms
  • 45 min
  • Family
  • Vegan options

A 45-minute lunch buffer right in the River North core, near our pickup point. We park near McDonald's because it's predictable and has clean restrooms, but you have a dozen real Chicago options within a 5-minute walk. Order quick — the van leaves at 1:00 PM sharp because the Skydeck timed slot can't be moved.

What to do here

  • Portillo's (Chicago dogs & Italian beef) — 4-minute walk
  • Eataly Chicago — quick pasta or panini, 5-minute walk
  • Pizano's deep-dish slice counter — 6-minute walk

Insider tip: Pre-order on the Portillo's app while we drive over — it's usually ready when you walk in.

Skydeck Chicago, Chicago

Willis Tower

Skydeck Chicago

  • Indoor
  • Thrill
  • Iconic view
  • Tickets req.
  • Pre-book

The Skydeck sits on the 103rd floor of Willis Tower at 1,353 feet — for 25 years it was the tallest building in the world. The headline experience is The Ledge, four glass-floor balconies that cantilever 4.3 feet out from the building so you can look straight down at the streets. On a clear day you can see four states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

What to do here

  • Step onto The Ledge — glass floors at 1,353 feet
  • Multi-state views on a clear day
  • Interactive exhibits before the elevator

Insider tip: Pre-book a 1:15–1:30 PM timed slot online — it's the single biggest time-saver of the day. Skip the line is included with CityPASS.

Shedd Aquarium, Chicago

Museum Campus

Shedd Aquarium

  • Indoor
  • Family
  • Wheelchair OK
  • Tickets req.
  • CityPASS

Shedd Aquarium sits on the lakefront with 32,000 animals across six habitats. The 90,000-gallon Caribbean Reef in the rotunda is the centrepiece — a 270-degree underwater walkthrough you can lean into. The Oceanarium has belugas, dolphins, sea otters, and a wall of glass facing Lake Michigan, which is genuinely surreal: the lake and the tank line up at the horizon.

What to do here

  • Caribbean Reef — go first, it's the busiest later
  • Beluga whales & dolphins in the Oceanarium
  • Amazon Rising — piranhas, anacondas, caimans

Insider tip: Included in Chicago CityPASS. Hold your phone QR ready before you reach the front desk — it cuts the entry time in half.

Field Museum, Chicago

Museum Campus

Field Museum

  • Indoor
  • Family
  • Wheelchair OK
  • Tickets req.
  • CityPASS

The Field is one of the largest natural-history museums in the world and home to SUE, the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex ever discovered (40 feet long, 90% of the original bones). Beyond SUE there are entire halls on ancient Egypt with real mummies, the Hall of Gems, and a walk-through model of the human body. With one hour we recommend doing SUE plus one other hall.

What to do here

  • SUE the T. rex — Stanley Field Hall, you can't miss her
  • Inside Ancient Egypt — 23 actual mummies
  • Grainger Hall of Gems

Insider tip: Head right to SUE on arrival — she's in the main hall, and the crowd thins after 3:30 PM. Skip the special exhibits unless you've pre-booked.
